Plain-language summary

What this paper says

A plain-language read of the study’s main message and where it applies.

Study focus

This study examined the effects of cranberry juice enriched with omega-3 on inflammatory markers in diabetic patients with periodontal disease, finding significant improvements in several health markers.

Clinical relevance

This research highlights the potential of dietary interventions, such as cranberry juice enriched with omega-3, in managing inflammation and oxidative stress in diabetic patients with periodontal disease. These findings suggest that such dietary changes could be a beneficial adjunct to traditional treatments, potentially improving patient outcomes in this population.

Keep in mind

Limited sample size may affect the generalizability of results. Short duration of the study may not capture long-term effects. Potential confounding factors not fully controlled.

Main Effects

Serum total antioxidant capacity increased by 0.31 mg/L in the I3 group (p=0.043).

Serum malondialdehyde decreased by -1.6 mmol/L in the I2 and I3 groups (p=0.001).

Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein decreased by -0.34 mg/dL in the I3 group (p=0.008).

Clinical attachment loss significantly reduced in all groups.
